3 THINGS I LEARNED ON MY SUMMER BREAK

Week One

Pastor James

It's easier (but not better)

to "do" than to "be".

DOING IS CRITICAL:

“Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.”   James 4:17 (NLT2)

DOING IS FAITH IN ACTION:

“What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.”

James 2:14-17 (NLT2)

THE POTENTIAL PROBLEM:

Activity - Connection = burnout, emptiness, & bitterness

But Martha was very busy doing many things for Jesus.”

Luke 10:40a

“She came to Jesus and said, `Lord, my sister has left me to do all the work. Do you not care? Tell her to come and help me.'”

 Luke 10:40b

“The Lord answered her, `Martha, Martha, you are worrying. You are troubled about many things. Only one thing is needed. What Mary has chosen is good. And it will not be taken away from her.'

Luke 10:41-42

JESUS' SOLUTION TO OUR PROBLEM:

Stillness + Connection = peace, fulfillment, and joy

TWO COMMON ERRORS.

  1. CONSUMING without SHARING
  2. SHARING without CONSUMING

“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’”

Matthew 7:21-23 (NLT2)

“I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.”

 John 15:1-4 (NLT2)

“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.”

John 15:5-8 (NLT2)

Activity - Connection = FRUITLESSNESS

Connection + Boundaries = FRUITFULNESS

ROOTED TO PRODUCE FRUIT:

“...they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.”

Psalm 1:2-3 (NLT2)

WHAT TO DO SO THAT YOU CAN BE BETTER:

  1. ADMIT & CONFESS
  2. REPENT & RECONNECT
  3. SET HEALTHIER BOUNDARIES
