We believe that the positive example of Scripture is for faith-filled parents to recognize the gift that God has provided in our children and to ‘dedicate’ our children back to Him as we raise them in the faith.
Hannah Dedicates Samuel: “And she made this vow: “O LORD of Heaven’s Armies, if you will look upon my sorrow and answer my prayer and give me a son, then I will give him back to you. He will be yours for his entire lifetime, and as a sign that he has been dedicated to the LORD, his hair will never be cut.” … “Now I am giving him to the LORD, and he will belong to the LORD his whole life.” And they worshiped the LORD there.” 1 Samuel 1:11, 28 (NLT) Joseph and Mary Dedicate Jesus: “Then it was time for their purification offering, as required by the law of Moses after the birth of a child; so his parents took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. The law of the Lord says, “If a woman’s first child is a boy, he must be dedicated to the LORD.” So they offered the sacrifice required in the law of the Lord—“either a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” Luke 2:22-24 (NLT)
Certainly, dedication doesn’t mean we leave our children with a priest/pastor (please, no!)!! And, the truth is we are no longer under the law or are required to participate in the Ancient Israelite Temple rituals. But the principles of dedication remain. Grateful parents ‘dedicate’ their children back to the Lord, remain faithful, and give thanks!
