FOOLPROOF Week 4

Wisdom from Proverbs to keep you from actin'a fool.

Pastor James

ENVY WAS A PART OF SATAN'S SIN:

“How you are fallen from heaven, O shining star, son of the morning! You have been thrown down to the earth, you who destroyed the nations of the world. For you said to yourself, ‘I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God’s stars. I will preside on the mountain of the gods far away in the north. I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High.”

Isaiah 14:12-14 (NLT2)

ENVY WAS PART OF WHAT LED TO THE FALL OF ADAM AND EVE:

“You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.” The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.”

Genesis 3:4-7 (NLT2)

"Envy is the daughter of pride, the author of murder and revenge, the father of secret treason, the perpetual tormenter of virtue. Envy is the filthy slime of the soul; a venom, a poison, a quicksilver, which consumeth the flesh and drieth up the marrow of the bones."

- Socrates

ENVY CAUSED CAIN TO KILL ABEL:

“When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the LORD. Abel also brought a gift—the best of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The LORD accepted Abel and his gift, but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected. “Why are you so angry?” the LORD asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”

Genesis 4:3-7 (NLT2)

ENVY CAUSED RACHEL TO SIN AGAINST HER SISTER AND HUSBAND:

“When Rachel saw that she wasn’t having any children for Jacob, she became jealous of her sister. She pleaded with Jacob, “Give me children, or I’ll die!”

Genesis 30:1 (NLT2)

ENVY CAUSED CONFLICT WITH THE SONS OF JACOB:

“Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So one day Jacob had a special gift made for Joseph—a beautiful robe. But his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn’t say a kind word to him.”

Genesis 37:3-4 (NLT2)

ENVY CAUSED SAUL TO WANT TO KILL DAVID:

“This made Saul very angry. “What’s this?” he said. “They credit David with ten thousands and me with only thousands. Next they’ll be making him their king!” So from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David.”

1 Samuel 18:8-9 (NLT2)

ENVY MADE THE LEADERS OF THE JEWS WANT TO KILL JESUS:

“He knew very well that the religious leaders had arrested Jesus out of envy.”

Matthew 27:18 (NLT2)

ENVY IS IN THE 'TOP 10'!

"You must not be envious of your neighbor’s house, or want to sleep with his wife, or want to own his slaves, oxen, donkeys, or anything else he has."

Exodus 20:17 (TLB)

JESUS ALSO CONDEMNED ENVY:

“And he said to them, “...do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”

Mark 7:18-23 (ESV)

“Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?”

Proverbs 27:4 (KJV)

“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”

Proverbs 14:30 (NIV)

“What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it.  And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure.”

James 4:1-3 (NLT2)

“...if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.”

James 3:14-16 (NIV)

“Don’t envy violent people or copy their ways. Such wicked people are detestable to the LORD, but he offers his friendship to the godly.”

Proverbs 3:31-32 (NLT2)

“Don’t fret because of evildoers; don’t envy the wicked. For evil people have no future; the light of the wicked will be snuffed out.”

Proverbs 24:19-20 (NLT2)

TAKE IT FROM ONE WHO KNOWS:

“So I became greater than all who had lived in Jerusalem before me, and my wisdom never failed me. Anything I wanted, I would take. I denied myself no pleasure. I even found great pleasure in hard work, a reward for all my labors.  But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless—like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere.”

Ecclesiastes 2:9-11 (NLT2)

“Don’t envy sinners, but always continue to fear the LORD.  You will be rewarded for this; your hope will not be disappointed.”

Proverbs 23:17-18 (NLT2)

Don’t worry about the wicked or envy those who do wrong. For like grass, they soon fade away. Like spring flowers, they soon wither. Trust in the LORD and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you. He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun. Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes.”

Psalm 37:1-7 (NLT2)

Don’t envy evil people or desire their company. For their hearts plot violence, and their words always stir up trouble.”

Proverbs 24:1-2 (NLT2)

THE KEYS TO COMBATTING ENVY

KEY #1:  Simply to fear the Lord.

“Don’t envy sinners, but always continue to fear the LORD.  You will be

rewarded for this; your hope will not be disappointed.”

Proverbs 23:17-18 (NLT2)

“...I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”

Philippians 4:11-13 (NLT2)

KEY #2:  Loving people more than we love ourselves.

“...suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed

up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does

not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things,

hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-8a (NKJV)

KEY #3:  Don't fall for the comparison trap.

“Then I observed that most people are motivated to success because they envy their

neighbors. But this, too, is meaningless—like chasing the wind.”

Ecclesiastes 4:4 (NLT2)

WHAT DOES HE/SHE HAVE TO DO WITH YOU?

“Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.” Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved—the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, “Lord, who will betray you?”  Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?” Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.”

John 21:19b-22 (NLT2)

KEY #4:  Be grateful for what you do have!.

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's

will for you in Christ Jesus.”

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

“That evening he told the foreman to call the workers in and pay them, beginning with the last workers first. When those hired at five o’clock were paid, each received a full day’s wage. When those hired first came to get their pay, they assumed they would receive more. But they, too, were paid a day’s wage. When they received their pay, they protested to the owner, ‘Those people worked only one hour, and yet you’ve paid them just as much as you paid us who worked all day in the scorching heat.’   'He answered one of them, ‘Friend, I haven’t been unfair! Didn’t you agree to work all day for the usual wage? Take your money and go. I wanted to pay this last worker the same as you.  Is it against the law for me to do what I want with my money? Should you be jealous [envious] because I am kind to others?’ “So those who are last now will be first then, and those who are first will be last.”

Matthew 20:8-16 (NLT2)
