CATHOLICISM & PROTESTANTISM

JESUS IS THE ROCK THE CHURCH IS BUILT UPON:

“...who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being. Now I say to you that you are Peter (which means ‘rock’), and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.”

Matthew 16:15-18 (NLT2)

THE NICEAN CREED:

We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.  And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, begotten from the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made; of the same essence as the Father.  Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and was made human.  He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried. The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again with glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom will never end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life. He proceeds from the Father and the Son, and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.  He spoke through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.  We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.  We look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and to life in the world to come. Amen.”

SOME SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES:

1)  THE SOURCE OF AUTHORITY – SOLA SCRIPTURA

“You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”

2 Timothy 3:15-17 (NLT2)

“Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.”

Hebrews 1:1-2 (NLT2)

“Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body.”

Colossians 2:8-9 (NLT2)

2)  THE SOURCE OF OUR SALVATION – SOLA GRACIA, SOLA FIDE, SOLA CHRISTUS

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.” Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. They have the same Lord, who gives generously to all who call on him. For “Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.”

Romans 10:9-13 (NLT2)

"God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

Ephesians 2:8-10 (NLT2)

“If his good deeds had made him acceptable to God, he would have had something to boast about. But that was not God’s way. For the Scriptures tell us, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned. But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners.”

Romans 4:2-5 (NLT2)

JUSTIFICATION – THE MOMENT OF SAVING BELIEF

SANCTIFICATION – THE LIFETIME OF SUBMISSION AND TRANSFORMATION

3)  THE SOURCE OF OUR ETERNAL SECURITY -

“…since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”

Hebrews 4:14-16 (NLT2)

ADDITIONAL WAYS CATHOLICS SEEK SECURITY:

a. Praying to Mary & the Saints

  1. Every Believer in Christ is a Saint
  2. Saints are not angels nor do they have any authority or influence in Heaven.
  3. Mary, the sinner is not as Savior.

"For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus.”

1 Timothy 2:5 (NLT2)

ADDITIONAL WAYS CATHOLICS SEEK SECURITY:

b) Purgatory & Prayers/Payments for the Dead

“...each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment...”  Hebrews 9:27-28 (NLT2)

WE CANNOT ATONE FOR OUR OWN SINS:

“We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.  For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood.”

Romans 3:22-25a (NLT2)
