May I? WEEK 3

Define or Redefine Human Sexuality?

SOME THINGS WE HAVE TO CONFESS & COMMIT TO:

  1. OUR OWN SIN AND PRIDE
  2. A NEED FOR GREATER HUMILITY
  3. A COMMITMENT TO LOVE
  4. A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF GOD'S GRACE

“When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”

 Romans 5:6-8 (NLT2)

OUR QUESTION: May I define (or redefine) Human sexuality/Sexual Identity?

GOD'S ANSWER: No!

WHY? Because God (the Designer/Creator) has already done that.

“...God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like ourselves. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”

So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.”

...Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good! And evening passed and morning came, marking the sixth day.”

                     Genesis 1:26-28, 31 (NLT2)

het·er·o·sex·u·al (hedərəˈsekSH(o͞o)əl/adjective)

a person sexually attracted to people of the opposite sex.

“Haven’t you read the Scriptures?” Jesus replied. “They record that from the beginning ‘God made them male and female.’ And he said, ‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.”  Matthew 19:4-6 (NLT2)

“Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God"

 I Cor. 6:9-10 (NLT2)

THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL – WE CAN BE CHANGED!

“Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God."

I Corinthians 6:11

LIBERTY, BUT...

“You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything.”   v. 12

“You say, “Food was made for the stomach, and the stomach for food.” (This is true, though someday God will do away with both of them.) But you can’t say that our bodies were made for sexual immorality. They were made for the Lord, and the Lord cares about our bodies.”  v. 13

“Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body. Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body."

 I Corinthians 6:18-20 (NLT2)

ho·mo·sex·u·al (hōməˈsekSH(o͞o)əl/adjective)

a person sexually attracted to people of one's own sex.

“Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin.” Leviticus 18:22 (NLT2)

WHY NOT? Because practicing homosexuality...

a) is in direct conflict with the way that God decided to meet our original needs for intimacy

b) is in direct conflict with the way God has created our bodies to work.

c) can never create and reproduce human life...to fill and subdue the Earth.

“But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.”  Romans 1:18-20 (NLT2)

“Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.

So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.

That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.

Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done.

… Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.”

Romans 1:18-28, 32b (NLT2)

trans·gen·der (tranzˈjendər/adjective)

denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender

does not correspond with their birth sex.

“A woman must not put on men’s clothing, and a man must not wear women’s clothing. Anyone who does this is detestable in the sight of the LORD your God.”

                           Deuteronomy 22:5 (NLT2)

cis·gen·der (sisˈjendər/adjective)

denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender

                     corresponds with their birth sex.

THE BIBLICAL TRANS-FORMATION THAT GOD APPROVES OF:

“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”  Romans 12:1-2 (NLT2)
