God in the Flesh

John 1:1-18

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

V9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”

V14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15(John bore witness about him, and cried out, ‘This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’) 16 And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.”

V1-In the beginning was the Word.

Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

John 17:5 “And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.”

V1 And the Word was with God

V1 And the Word was God

V2 He was in the beginning with God

V3 ALL THINGS were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

Colossians 1:16 “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities - all things were created through him and for him.

Romans 11:33-36 “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! 34 ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?’ 35 ‘Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?’ 36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.”

Hebrews 1:1-2 “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God

spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.”

V4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men

John 5:26 “For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.”

V14 ”And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us

V14b And we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Only begotten - begotten (monogenes) means:

"being the only one of its kind or class, unique in kind. John was primarily concerned with demonstrating that Jesus is the Son of God, and he uses monogenes to highlight Jesus as uniquely God’s Son - sharing the same divine nature as God. Jesus is God’s ‘one and only’ Son. It does not mean ‘produced’ or ‘created’ by the Father as some Jehovah’s Witnesses believe. (Gotquestions.org)

V15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, ‘This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’)

V16 And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace

V17 Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ

V18 “No one has ever seen God’ the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.”

Colossians 1:15 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities - all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all

the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Hebrews 1:1-4 “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.”
