STARTING POINT WEEK 5

"Nothing But"

During childhood, you may have been handed a faith framework through which you began to view the world. For a lot of us, that childhood framework didn't survive the rigors of adulthood. It's not enough to say, "The Bible says . . . ," in the face of real-life tragedy. Adults often need a new starting point.

But the starting point for Christian faith isn't, "The Bible says . . . ." It's better than that. It's Jesus.

"What can wash away my sin?"

OUR QUESTION: “What would it look like to have an adult starting point for our faith?”

SIN HAS A WAY OF CATCHING UP TO US…

“...if you fail to keep your word, then you will have sinned against the LORD, and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.”      Numbers 32:23 (NLT)

BUT, BUT, BUT…

  • I was young
  • I was drunk
  • I was angry
  • I was lonely
  • I was broke
  • I didn’t know any better
  • I just did what everyone else was doing
  • I wasn't even a believer yet

LIAR, LUNATIC, OR LORD?

“I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him [that is, Christ]: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic–on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg–or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse…. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” - C.S. Lewis

“God sent a man, John the Baptist, to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.”    John 1:6-9 (NLT)

“John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’”    John 1:15

...“I am a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Clear the way for the LORD’s coming!’”  John 1:23

“...the Pharisees who had been sent asked him, “If you aren’t the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet, what right do you have to baptize?” John told them, “I baptize with water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize. Though his ministry follows mine, I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandal.” This encounter took place in Bethany, an area east of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing.”         John 1:24-28 (NLT)

“...John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”      v. 29

“He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’ I did not recognize him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.” Then John testified, “I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon him. I didn’t know he was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, he told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God.”     John 1:30-34 (NLT)

QUESTION: “What can wash away our sins?”

  • Religion?
  • Acts of sacrifice and good works?
  • Being from the right nation, right party, right church, right family?
  • Giving a bunch of money?
  • Being really devoted and knowing a bunch of religious and biblical facts?

ANSWER: Nothing but the blood of Jesus!

“You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.”   Colossians 2:13-14 (NLT)

“Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 (NIV)

WHAT CAN WASH AWAY MY SINS? NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD OF JESUS!

“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body." Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Matthew 26:26-28 (NIV)
