Genesis 2:18-25- Marriage

1+1=1

“Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed[b] every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam[c] there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made[d] into a woman and brought her to the man. 23 Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones

    and flesh of my flesh;

she shall be called Woman,

because she was taken out of Man.”[e]

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast

to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.”

V18 “Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’ V19-20Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.”

V21-22 “So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.”

V23 -“Then the man said, ‘This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’”

V24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Ephesians 5:23For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.”

V24b and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

-Hold fast meaning to adhere, to glue, to cling, stay with. A coming together to never be separated again. To become one flesh.

-A covenant refers to two or more people bound together. Establishing a bond between two parties, it’s the idea of cleaving, or sticking together like super glue.

-The difference between a contract and a covenant is that a contract is an agreement between two or more parties, especially one that is written and enforceable by law. Contracts are based on protection and mistrust. They allow the parties involved to look for loop holes and exit clauses, and are centered on your rights and protection.

-A Covenant allows you to be loving, to be tender, to be faithful, regardless of circumstances.  Todd Wagner from Watermark Church, “If you are looking to get married there are three things that are really important.

Let me give you three things:

1. Master- Does he or she share the same master (Jesus) as you?

2 Corinthians 6:14-16aDo not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God;”

2. Mission - Is His or her desire to know and grow in Christ and want to make disciples as Jesus made disciples. Do they share the same heart and mission that Jesus their master has.

3. Mate- (Look for someone who has the same master and mission.)

V25 “And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.”

-REMINDER: Love is a choice not a feeling. We choose to love.

“Intimacy is the incredible joy of knowing someone fully and being known by them with no fear of rejection. It is a wonderful thing, something to be desired. But intimacy is fragile. It doesn’t just happen. And it can be destroyed. Sexual impurity erodes a person’s capacity to experience intimacy.” (Andy Stanley)

SEX:

-Sex is a sign of the covenant- the consummation of a marriage.

-It was made for one man and one woman within covenant marriage.  Anything outside of that is sin, and a sexual perversion.

-It was made for reproduction - have children & multiply.

-For pleasure

-It brings glory to God when done within marriage.

-Its a gift from God.

-There is no shame or guilt when its within Marriage.

Hebrews 13:4 “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.”

Ephesians 5:22-24 “Wives, submit to your own husbands,

as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.”

-Submitting as unto the Lord

Ephesians 5:33 “However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.”

Ephesians 5:25-33

“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.”

1 Corinthians 13:5 “....It does not insist on its own way”

1 Peter 3:1-6 “Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct. 3 Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. 5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.”
