Sunday, September 2nd
“Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.
As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, "Look, here is water. Why shouldn't I be baptized?" And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.” Acts 8:35-38 (NIV)
At Mission Point, we believe in Believer’s Baptism. That is to say, as we follow the example of Jesus…
“As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water…” Matthew 3:16 (NIV)
…and the command of Jesus…
“Go to the people of all nations and make them my disciples. Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit…”
Matthew 28:19 (CEV)
… we believe the following about Believers Baptism:
a. Baptism is only for those who have accepted Christ - that is why we do not baptize infants (we do infant dedications instead) at Mission Point. The infant cannot understand what is happening, nor choose Christ for himself. Therefore we reserve the right of baptism for those who have consciously and willfully chosen to accept Christ as personal savior and Lord.
b. Baptism is only a symbol- Baptism doesn’t make you a believer, it simply shows that you already believe. It is your ‘advertisement’ to the world that you have accepted Jesus as your savior. Faith, not baptism, saves us. It is an outward symbol of our inward commitment.
c. Baptism is to be by immersion while we would baptize a believer in a different mode, we believe that immersion (lowering the believer completely under the water) is not only the way it was done in the Bible, but the best symbol of our ‘cleansing’ and our ‘death’ and ‘resurrection’ there is.
ª Baptism is by immersion. All baptisms in the Bible were done this way. Individuals being baptized will be leaned back and lowered under water for a moment and brought back up by the baptismal team.
