Deceit & Desires

Pastor Rich

Genesis 3:1-7

V1 “Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.”

Who or what is the serpent?

Revelation 12:9And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.”

Revelation 20:1-3 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. 2 And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, 3 and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.”

Lucifer - means “morning star”, “son of the dawn,” “Day Star / Daystar” or shining star.

Isaiah 14:12-15 ““How you are fallen from heaven,

    O Day Star, son of Dawn!

How you are cut down to the ground,

    you who laid the nations low!

13 You said in your heart,

    ‘I will ascend to heaven;

above the stars of God

    I will set my throne on high;

I will sit on the mount of assembly

    in the far reaches of the north;[c]

14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;

    I will make myself like the Most High.’

15 But you are brought down to Sheol,

    to the far reaches of the pit.

Ezekiel 28:11-17 “Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: 12 “Son of man, raise a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:

“You were the signet of perfection,

    full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.

13 You were in Eden, the garden of God;

     every precious stone was your covering,

sardius, topaz, and diamond,

     beryl, onyx, and jasper,

sapphire,[b] emerald, and carbuncle;

     and crafted in gold were your settings

     and your engravings.[c]

On the day that you were created

     they were prepared.

14 You were an anointed guardian cherub.

     I placed you;[d] you were on the holy mountain of God;

    in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.

15 You were blameless in your ways

    from the day you were created,

     till unrighteousness was found in you.

16 In the abundance of your trade

     you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned;

so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God,

     and I destroyed you,[e] O guardian cherub,

     from the midst of the stones of fire.

17 Your heart was proud because of your beauty;

     you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.

I cast you to the ground;

    I exposed you before kings,

     to feast their eyes on you.

Jesus said “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”

Luke 10:17-19The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.”

Do you know who your enemy is?

Satan / Devil:

He has been sinning from the beginning 1 John 3:8

He is a deceiver Revelation 20:10, Revelation 12:9

He is the tempter Matthew 4:1-3 / 1Thessalonians 3:5

He is a murderer John 8:44

There is no truth in him John 8:44

He is a liar and the father of lies John 8:44

He disguises himself as an angel of light 2 Corinthians 11:13-15

He prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour  1 Peter 5:8

V1b “He said to the woman, ‘Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?

V2-3 “And the woman said to the serpent, ‘We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”

V4-5  “But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

V6 “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

James 1:13-15 “Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”

Most temptation from the enemy falls into three categories:

1 John 2:15-17 “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

Lust (desires) of the flesh

Lust (desires) of the eyes

Pride of life

2 Samuel 11:1-5 “In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. 2 It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king's house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. 3 And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. 5 And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.”

V7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.”

Psalm 119:37 Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things;

and give me life in your ways.

1 Peter 5:6 “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you

casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
