The Letter of 2 Peter was penned to the same group of Christians as before - and not long after the first - but this time there’s a level of urgency with Peter knowing the end of his life is near. The author took this opportunity to remind those believers (and us in the present day) of an unfortunate reality:
Not only was persecution increasing, but the rise of false teachers was a prevalent threat facing the church, with intentions to distort the truth and deceive believers.
Peter invites the Christian to take a stand, and challenges us to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” through the strength provided by the Holy Spirit.
As he reminds us that the day of the Lord is coming, he also encourages us that God knows how to rescue the godly from trials and reminds us that the revelations of truth in Christ and in Scripture are sure because they are from God and not from man.
Let’s take up Peter’s calling to grow in our faith and open our Bibles as we journey through 2 Peter!
